Jeffrey Sachs writes...we can end extreme poverty by the middle of this century..very true, we believe, very true...

so true for all of us, we can subtract or sacrifice much of the extras to save lives...

 

today was an interesting journey for me..i rode the Metro North to Grand central with my bike on hand..and met a family i knew...Jose is in Jail Jimmy...they showed me a fifteen thousand dollar check..to be paid to the federal agency..where at 26 Federal plaza...they would have to go to pay..he was arrested in Freehold..

I knew Jose because he and his family were friends..ihave referred him many times to help get work, and his skills are bar none...living in substandard housing..i wondered what the 15000 now to be paid to stop deportation could have fed the family with or put money on ahouse for...

 

i rode my bike down Park avenue, down Madison, down through Soho, down Canal, but over thru the bowery..where i used tohelp the homeless..now an Avalon building of high rents.no ownership...

great attractive, yet no affordable increase..going .s of canal, i went down broadway all the way..past the federal plaza..past 911 and trinity church, past the century 21..and over by John street to the habitat meeting...with my co directors, including Paterson Habitat where i first started, and also NYC habitat where i was on the board....

 

the meeting talked about how could we do more, lets think out of the box..THIS IS HABITAT TIME..THIS IS OUR TIME...NO QUESTION!!!!

 

my life has so many more questions, daily, i ask about how can we do more...God help us do more, to get homes for people in the NY area, to change dwellings and families lives to better lives and to change our own..how can we change poverty now...what Robert Moses of anti poverty strength and vision will come and not build highways of seperation, but visions of HOPE and celebration fro all families ending poverty in our area..WE HAVE ONLY JUST BEGUN...may Millard be in heaven, my dad...Mother Teresa who i met..anne and many others..God bless you all, have a dream, help us build dreams and end poverty in our lifetime.WE CAN

Hallen School comes out today...exciting calls with the FAzzino group, with Julie planning our big event...

also we are busy helping to make it happen here wtih a cleanup day, and volunteers building aggressively on our sites in Yonkers...all good, our high school leaders, who will change the world in the future as well as now, continue to help daily, ten of them now, that number will grow...college kids coming home helping.getting involved..

we welcome Steve who is helping us on our sites, from Holy Cross College a sophomore, a great help..political science major..

thanks to Keller Williams who gives us a check today...we keep it all going..they raised money all month tohelp us...

In todays world, people still are losing homes left and right...programs like the GI bill hiliting veterans during this memorial day weekend, are ones that on a positive forefront, need to be redeveloped again...first time homebuyers programs need to be recognized and information communicated out regularly, no question...

 

on this Sunday morning we remember all those who have struggled with their home, with their life, with their ability to have the American Dream come true, from Veterans to homeowners, from those who dare to dream and those who help us..time for us to be able to see the changes back to simple decent homes increase...

Tuesday after our Memorial Day weekend...a great weekend.. everyone time to get back to prayer work saving, building then fun with friends and families celebrating the summer...Our summer will be busy with buidlers campers, with adults and youth volunteering, with many helping all over the county on homes..

 

We need extra helpers to be able to work hard to finish a home this week before June 1st.. we will be working to help finsih a home.. to help this great family get into their house.... join us or call me at 403 4821 to help us finish this house, we need to work hard, to get the family in their house..so join us..

 

We also have great sidewalk sales in New Rochelle this week at our Restores..just in we have furniture from Drexel and Crate and Barrel will be coming in too, come by and get great summer sales while we move ahead in helping build homes with your purchases.

 

Last if you congregation isnt involved, we ask WHY?  WE NEED YOUR CONGREGATION TO PRAY FOR US, TO VOLUNTEER WITH US, TO BUILD WITH US, TO SEND MENTORS WITH US, TO ASSIST US...

here we go moving ahead...life is intersting to say the least...we are busy getting ready for Memorial Day Sales..working hard, helping others...what a great weekend!!!!! no question..pray for our Veterans...pray fo rour success of building Veterans Homes.. pray for one another...this week we were keenly reminded of the way that a war of religion is on...we have a war of theology ..the theology of hte hammer to build homes....Jewish Synagogues in the Bronx were threatened...threatened by terrorists, who believed God told them to kill Jews....we are united by the war against poverty of a war that says Love one another as your weapon, build homes together whether you Christian, Jewish, Muslim or no religion at all, and change the world.....The Veterans, FBI, Police did a great job protecting us and finding out that the Bombers were planning...

We are planning to be building with the conviction of Faith and Action...this weekend with Brush wtih Kindness at Hudson Park, this weekend finishing a home for a family whose son has a bullet in him..building a home for families who a simlpe decent home to live in, including Veterans...

God bless the Veterans, our soldiers, our famlies, the theology of the hammer and each one of you.. I dedicate this to my uncles, Bille, Edmund and James who all fought in WWII, to my cousin killed in Vietnam, and to each of you..jjk

another great weekend...HRD, Solomon Schecter, volunteers, helping.. and more..

our Restores successful and life is good knowing you might get Jose and his son Chris in their home soon..

Saturday on site many were there, helping to make it all happen...volunteers were welcomed by two families doing sweat equity...helping out, telling them how unbelievable it was for people to be helping build their homes...Love in the mortar joints Millard and Linda callled it...Love in the mortar joints...can you beleive you have the sweat of Jewish and Christian and Muslim and companies and kids and families and congregations all inyour home..habitat families?

 

so amazing..every day...so amazing...

 

switch to Harbor Fest Mamoroneck...like being home...i bring our SoNoNewRo bike members there, to see our work, to see Liz Covingtons home, and we have a table, where volunteers sign two by fours, sign them andthey go into the house, donors sign them...and volunteers like Mary Lou and Niall and Mary and Dave and many help to tell the story, come build with us...the Local Project committee of Mamoroneck Larchmont is strong, like that of Somers, like that of Yonkers...

 

so stay tuned, exciting things will be happening all summer ..along with our Builders Camp..

 

Last I need to give praise to our Lord Jesus Christ, who motivates our very heart of our existence, and calls us to welcome  with my Jewish and Muslim friends, to help love one another and lead one another so another wall can be built, another neighborhood, another families life, and volunteers life can be changed forever...thank you Lord.  a family rises this monring....off to school...the apartment is cold, even though it is not too cold outside, the stove does not work..the landlord never fixed it, the rats are running...or perhaps another mom and her daughter who came into our Restore asking for help.. we have no bed..there are mice on the floor, we just can t live this way...or Jose and his family, when can we move in..or Mrs Y, calls and says, they jacked up the rent again..when can we move in...the house will be finished this week it will be finished this week, you will be in for June 1...
These are the changes we hope to make, from lousy sub standard conditions, to homes, from basement apartments wtih flooding to storing things in the basement for the Memorial Day cookout with a yard in the back for their first holiday...where will  you be this weekend..what will you celebrate Memorial Day...how will you be living...
Our veterans come home from Iraq...great parades, great accolades, thank you sir, yes sir, good to be back home..they might say..but maybe not good to be back in their small apartment that costs more than 50 percent of their income..where do they live..who hires them, any veterans home ownership programs coming up..
Habitat is commited this weeked to help the Veterans, to announce the need for creating safe
decent homes for those that have protected us, for those that we wake up every morning too, in a safe neighborhood, while the soldiers wake up praying, God give me another safe day today...

my uncles fought in WWII, in England, in Anzio, my cousin killed in Vietnam...make this memorial day special..and make a commitment to our newly announced Homes for Veterans program..

Another great day in the vineyard, on sites, and in the county…we prepare as always for a busy weekend..every weekend so busy, with all we do..

2 x 4s being signed at Harbor Fest, New Rochelle High School, HDR Bronxville Community church being invited, Sue Kornish and the temple coming out to join us….…prayers over buildings and land…college kids lifting donated cabinets and furniture..(including Daniel my son, a blessing..) and many many more exciting things…

We are on a mission to say the least, to change the face of Westchester county in terms of simple decent homes…to get communities going all over from New Rochelle to Somers, Yonkers to Wacabuc..all in need of simple decent homes..

 

This summer have a different vacation, come and visit with us, come and build with us, come and join us…!!!!! We can do this, we can change the face of communities to be happier with volunteerism and homes for the simple decent families wanting an opportunity to be blessed to live in one…

a busy day, no question...Larchmont Temple we salute...we also want to get the Young family in their home today...we are moving fast and furious to finish..Mothers day...we celebrate all of our moms who worked so hard for us this weekend and all of our Habitat moms......I remember my mom working hard as a single mom, when my dad died when i was young..she would do her own sweat equity on our home, living room, helping to paint etc..what a wonderwoman...i am sure your mom was a wonderwoman or is...we are praying today and tomorrow for all moms, single moms, divorced, married, widowed, whatever...but every mom has a special vocation including our Habitat moms...no question...so Congrads to all the moms and the kids and the future moms...BLESSINGS BLESSINGS BLESSINGS TO YOU AND YOURS FOR A NEW HOME...

Early morning, Monday, people getting ready to work, we are at the Restore on early Monday working, visitors come in, early morning Monday specials for sure...

Along with that we have many ready to buiod...thanks to Larchmont Temple this past weekend...a great day..for us to be able to see people come out on a Sat and help us out..thanks to Neil and all the crew..great future builders..

Yesterday we had a visitor from two visotrs one from Manhattan and another from Minessota to say the least which allowed us to be able to tell the story, they lvoed the restore, bought a Rockwell print and said they are coming back for furniture today and will volunteer with us..

Stop by and see us, we appreciate all your support...

Next we welcome Americorp who will be coming with us in the near future to work with us..exciting times...

here goes, we are looking into an area that has many challenges in life...Westchester in the Journal News, has hidden segregation everywhere, writes on person, as a result of the headline of the lawsuit over HUD holding back money...what can be done....

time to change the smoke and mirrors....today we recommit ourselves to help those who are alienated, hidden, not touched...even some of my own peers, who sit for hours in offices and feed into the hidden segregation, dont like what we do, because at the end of the day, what do we have to lose accept our integrity, and what do we have to gain, but MORE HOMES FOR FAMILIES OF ALL BACKGROUNDS.....no question...so when i say WE HAVE JUST BEGUN, GET READY...HABITAT IS ON THE WAY...GOD LOVE YOU. How great is our God, how great is our God…the song goes..for sure, we realize ths…music in the morning of a spiritual type might help set the day for you..for your work for your travel…for us in Habitat,we pray for all our families and yours for renewal, thanksgiving and more opportunities for simple decent homes here and across the world…..

 

Kudos yesterday and today on Yonkers business week..moving ahead, with business coming downtown, great to see that there is hope that there are businesses on Main Street moving in…I was fortunate to walk in and see many businesses there, and saw Mayor Phil…being cinco de Mayo I had my sombrero on, and Phil was glad to get a picture with the tallest gringo in a sombrero he had seen…seriously the Latino American business is a growing economy and one represented for the future in our neighborhoods and schools in our restaurants and yards….today I interview Charlie Gonzalez who with my friend Juan from Mexican Corner Restaurant talked about the challenge for small businesses today…he will join my radio show on wvox 1460 am today…

 

Homes…where are the homes for our workers…we need to think big, work hard and realize we can make it happen in our own community, like Somers tonite which has its great LPC meeting being held with many on the committee, working so hard so we can build away…

I bet you soldiers in Afghanistant, Pakistan, Iraq often pray, every morning...when under threat we need prayer and faith all the time...today I am honored to have 50 West Point cadets out in our neighborhood..praying, for our work in our neighborhood, for the war on poverty, for the war on finishing homes, and helping ....and another 70 people from two churches, building off of Riverdale...all praying for a successful day, and thounsands of volunteers across  the world this morning, stop and pray no matter what faith, for God s mercy, protection, grace and strength on Habitat homes sites and neighborhoods across the world....How profound..

do you pray in your own home..do you wake up and do I daily and call up the Lords help...and then act with love, mercy and hope for others...Habitat homes are signs of HOPE for the future, our Hammers instruments of war on poverty, our sweat water to help the earth and families grow...

Yesterday thanks to the West Point Cadets for all they did, helping on Porach Street..what a great blessing, what a great day...along iwth Pount Lookout outreach, Riverdale Presbyterian Church and theFowl architects group..what a day, 121 volunteers..

Then the Scarsdale group did a benefit for us last nite..helping us with a great silent auction the Brandt home..with great gratitude!

 

Today I speak in Somers at St. Lukes Episcopal church, a great congregation, spirit filled..on the road to be able to share wth them, join them and be blessed by their congregation so we can talk about Somers and how we will be helping to make homes a reality..

off and running, pray a great response, thank you to all of you who help us in the vineyard...to the Youngs and Sherline and Melissa and all God bless our families, and to Dan and Joe my sons, you are my heroes!

a new town opens up with land... a congregation gets on fire to help us..they start an local project committee, they find land, they start building,...is this your town or city..could it be...

thank you yesterday for the St Lukes Episcopal church in Somers meeting with me, their outreach committee...can you help us I ask, unequivocally they say yes...will they build.. of course..will they help us, yes!  

NOW IS YES TIME...this week i also have seven Scarsdale High school students assisting us..for internships..helping to work hard, organize, increase our outreach, build, help on our sites, move a warehouse, everything and anything...

 

NOW IS HABITAT TIME!  God wants this to happen no question. I remember being with two greats at one time, Millard Fuller and Jack Kemp at a meeting for Habitat...go out and get it, go out and start homes in your community they say...both great heroes..for homes!  one with Habitat the other as secretary of state...

Shout to the Lord all the ends of the earth, give Him Thanks...everyday we can start with things that divert us from our faith, no matter what faith it is...newspapers, gossip, hurrying to details..forgetting about giving thansk for such simple things like life, homes, job, family friends, food..

 

Now we need to really say thanks...for all of you..This Friday we have such great momentum because of you, moving into a new world..more than 140 volunteers over next two days and more people want to come out on Sunday..three events..music tonite, a Scardsale benefit Sat nite and a sharing at a church on Sunday, with restores open in between..all good..our weekends our not ours, they are the Lords for the sake of building Homes!  thank you..

 

Thanks yesterday to Nita Loweys office who i spoke with...Pat Keegan her right hand for years, is always welcoming and Nita in her busy schedule will come visit our sites on Sat...also with the Mayor...timing, is Gods timing..in all we do..

 

so we Shout to the Lord for all of you, for our families, for each breath, for each moment, for each toilet, window, door, shingle, molding, neighbor, piece of dirt which becomes land which becomes homesites...from here to S. Yonkers to S. Somers to S. Africa to all the world..have a blessed Friday, j
