Articles on our Katrina build in todays Journal News...and on LoHud.com....We now aggressively prepare for our busiest fall season in terms of buidling yet...from Bregal Investments coming out this Friday, to that of

the Ohio State buckeyes next week, 16 strong, Hackely school with 88 students...Americorp with ten student disaster volunteers, and the into our 911 buildathon, with Avalon on the Sound volunteers, Turner construction, Nationwide volunteers, the  Boy Scouts and many many more...These special events are vital for us, as they recommit us to the bital mission we have of rebuilding communities with volunteers and professionals, with hearts, hands and hammers, with Hope and Hundreds of dollars to get it done, and much more..our world is an evolution of joining together...and when we see the smiles or the words of families whose lives have been changed, then we know we can move ahead strongly into the future....

 

Last we will recommit ourselves to our GREEN BUILDING initiatives this fall..a conference in early Novermber is being planned and our Solar panels will have been put on our homes as of that time, an exciting endeavor..with hope for Gods blessings for all of you, a great Labor Day and an exciting fall season of school and success...please support and donate today as we continue our vital mission, with gratitude, JJK...

Today marks the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, two years..and marks in a way our anniversary of working four months of helping flood victims here in New Rochelle and Mamoroneck.....and the two are signficantly related..On this day Aug 29th 2007 we will have more than 100 volunteers helping in the town of Mamoroneck...working hard, helping to get Ginger and an 87 year old man in their homes, along with aiding with a River Cleanup and assisting in finishing Mrs. Carerras home...They will work on Waverly, Van Randst. First STreet, Second Street and Lester avenue in Mamoroneck...all important work for us to be part of so families...and we honor Habitat, our families and our new orleans families...Last nite I spoke to Flo in New Orleans, Erika now living in White Plains from NOLA and Rodney now living in Harlem with their families, all katrina victims..all people we have touched and been blessed to be part of their lives..from Gloria to Ivy to Maqrluz and her family and Sharon and Devante, all families who lived in New Orleans who now live in different areas and HFHW has helped we say God bless you and guide you and thank you for being part of our lives...

 

So now here is the real issue after we know how blessed we are with people that touch our lives...we need to GET THINGS FIXED NOW..DEMOCRATS REPUBLICANS, ELECTED OFFICIALS, NEED TO HOLD ACCOUNTABLE THE ARMY CORP STUDIES BEING IMPLEMENTED....From New Orleans to New Rochelle and from Metterie La. to Mamoroneck NY things need to be fixed now...we need to proud of America now that we are in our second stage of our history,not of building all new things, but maintainng and fixing problems with ingenuity, wisdom, engineering prowess and accountability that can once again be the example to the world, and more important be healthy for the communities we live in... we need to do this with GREEN DESIGN, with perseverance and dedication...so from NOLA to the SOUND SHORE, let us RESOLVE TODAY ON THIS OUR SECOND KATRINA ANNIVERSARY TO RECOMMIT OURSELVES TO

yesterday another blessed day.. Very proud to be part of Habitat for Humanity of Westchester, of Habitat for Humanity International and all my co habitats across the world..

another busy day, Fordham Law School on the site, we also had groups like Bedford Presbyterian Church on our Bedford homes, and also volunteers from Harvey school and also the schools of Fox Lane, a great groiup...Simulatanously I was able to get a call from the Mayor of Mamoroneck, Phil Trifiletti, and Phil stated..that the dredging was going on with excitement rightly so...at this point, huge machines were in Columbus Park, dredging doing great..exciting times to see this...we are all pushing for a meeting to be held to see all of the problems fixed, many have been invited and commiteed monies, but very few representatives have shown up at all to actually fix the problem of any kind, it has to be done ..no more homes can be flooded..I also asked that the dredge land we took out, and again Habitat was the first with all of our volunteers to go in the river three times to take out debris and dirt, be removed after we had taken it out of the rivers...it has not been removed from the side of the river, need to see it completed...

Last an interesting call brought me to New City to a play being put on by a group of professionals, guided by Brian and Melissa Zell i believe, great directors of many plays and shows, and down to earth people.. they open their home every year to actors from NYC and they help to put on  a play for the neighborhood...holding their new born baby in hand, they welcomed me with open arms..and had me speak to the guests about 300 about habitat... a great opportunity...significant dollars were raised and on one of the hottest days of the year, we were able to be part of a great event...Habitat's stage is the world, our actors are real and our volunteers the production company with so many making it all happen, our donors, our supporters our people who do the lightng....light me up with God s inpsiration to keep going and help everyone have a simple decent home...no question...EVERYONE A HOME is the theme..for our 20th anniversary, can we make this happen...absolutely...God Bless you...thank you to all who made it another great sat. from darlene to gloria, to hopeful homeowners to grace and more....the Excitement is building..jjk

Next two weeks become the busiest for us into the fall season..even the summers now many groups, companies, etc all want to come volunteer with us, what a blessing...with that in mind  we have been involved with assisting so many from here to bedford, yonkers to yorktown, from mt kisco to mt vernon.. Yesterday i was fortunate to work with kids from Harvey school and Fox lane school. These schools are ones which help to get kids involved so much. We are looking forward to seeing Harvey start a new habitat club this year and as well as Fox Lane being the strongest one going in the county. The Bedford site is right near by so it was a blessing to be able to see the  youth out there working. I also visited the New Rochelle High School football team, some ofthe kids there are looking forward to be part of TEAM HABITAT again like last year, where they worked on Mr. Ponds home, a great blesing for all. Also the Rye Hockey team and league will be joining us shortly to assist us with helping us in so many ways in building new homes as part of team habitat....so join our TEAM, build with us.. be with us pray with us, help us...without you another family does not have one...EVERYONE A HOME!!!!!! Easy like Sunday morning...the song goes...a day we can rest for many or celebrate family, or go to a baby shower...Espero tu tienes a buen dia hoy, Senor ti bendiga...

so many different things to be grateful for..so much, every minue we turn our heads, God is there for our blessings...Pray for all our families to be blessed this morning, anf or those who apply for homes, the so many of them...thanks to Chuck Lesnick and Ken Jenkins for nice calls on Sat. to me...I am blessed to know great Democrats, Republicans Independants...and people who know me, know thast with us here at Habitat, it is not about the party, it is about getting it done, about getting homes, about celebrating communities...the same applies to Faith communities..i was honored to attend mass at St. Francis Xavier in the city on 126th yesterday from my first marriage, and my kids were baptized there, but also honored to speak at a Congregational Church and then pray with a Rabbi on our site in Bedford before building...always so honored to realize people respect our work so much....

Vision ...now we need our vision for the 21st centruy..vision less wide roads, vision fewer cars..vision parking lots as possible housing spaces, and people walking and exercising more..

Today on the radio it announced that America is now 42nd in health care versus 11th it was four years ago..part of it is we are obese..can you believe this...maybe sitting at computer too much, maybe watching tv too much, maybe not enough exercise...i am going out on my bike ride now and will be pushing for bike lanes in many communities and less cars..we have too...kids are told they cant walk .7 miles to a park yet that is part of the piont to get exercise...we ride our car to the gym, workout and get back in the car. instead of walking...come on folks..waht are we doing to our selves...well there is HOPE..ALWAYS.. and we can turn things around. God wants this, we want this..we can have everyone in a decent home and community

AUGUST 2, 3, 4 HABITAT DAYS IN NEW ROCHELLE.. MANY RESTAURANTS, WILLCONTRIBUTE IF YOU PARTICIPATE IN THE DOWNTOWN BID RESTAURANT DAYS..TO HELP US WITH OUR NEW ROCHELLE PROJECTS...NO QUESITON. WE ALSO ARE INVOLVED WITH  HELPING TO GET READY FOR REHABBING THE LINCOLN AVENUE PARK AND SPRUCING IT IUP AND HELPING IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD WITH VOLUNTEERS FOR THE WEEKEND. NO QUESTION....

WE ALSO PREPARE FOR OUR 911 BUILDATHON AS WELL AS A BIG COOKOUT FOR OUR HOWARD AVENUE RESIDENTS..WE KEEP ON KEEPING.

 

YESTERDAY I WAS HONORED TO SPEAK AT THE SCARSDALE CONGREGATIONAL

AND IT WAS A GOOD DAY TO BE ABLE TO SHARE AGAIN WITH A GREAT CHURCH THAT HAS SUPPORTED US IN  ABIG WAY.. WE ARE EMBARKING ON OUR 20TH ANNIVERSARY AND TO REVISITN WTIH THOSE THAT HAVE HELPED US AND SHARED WITH US OVER THE YEARS TO MAKE US SUCCESSFUL IS AMAZING...WE ARE GRATEFUL TO GOD TO OUR COMPANIES, OUR CONGREGATIONS OUR SYNAGOGUES OUR SCHOOLS..TIME FOR US TO STEP IT UP A NOTCH.

 

LAST NITE I GOT A CALL FROM NEW ORLEANS..FROM OUR AMERICORP TEAM THAT FIRST HELPED..OUR SECOND DISASTER TEAM FROM AMERICORP CAME IN AND HAS BEEN DOING  AGREAT JOB TOO..THEY CAME TO THE CHURCH WITH ME IN WORK CLOTHES WTIH SHEETOCK DUST AND OTHER THINGS ON THEM, AND IT WAS WITH LOVE THEY WERE RECEIVED..THEY LEAVE THSI WEEK LETS HOPE WE GET ANOTHER TEAM..SO MUCH MORE WORK TO BE DONE..

so here goes..what do we see in the future for habitat.. i see us in every town, every part of the county, every country, every nation...no quesiton..God has so blessed us in our work..right now we here at Westchester are very excited about our work, about our going ahead and seeing many homes built..many neighborhoods, many lives changed on all sides of the aisle...Last nite as i watched the candidates debate the election, i cant help think of the money to go into the campaigns..we could build everyone a home no question....

Along with that we know with Harvards endowment everyone could have a home and an educaiton...

Last nite as I was on Purser place with our new neighbors for our Habitat families and community, we find that many are waiting to have a good home. I spoke with one mom with four kids, happy we were there, we spoke with her cousin who we will hire part time to get back to work and help us on our sites, we spoke with others on the street, very happy we are there, no question...all so good, all so positive in all that we do, glad to see the homes going up. Then I went into the Pearls School gym and talked with the head of the basketball league there, and saw how we could be an asset there as well

Its all good, we have a new vision for Purser place with our neighbors, who live on that street..congrads the excitement is building...

Along with that we are planning such big days in the county We are having a Yonkers weekend Sept 27 and 28trh. We re having a Bedford weekend in October and we are having a Habitat Day next week August 2nd in New Rochelle...all over the county local project committees are coming together, no question...

we can do this all together folks, we can make it happen, a vision in Westchester county of seeing everyone with a home...see the VISION WITH US, we have only just begun..God bless, jjk

Saturday morning Habitat style...a person at the coffee shop, states i want to come out and build with you.

another person states...my construction manager...things are moving great in Bedford, we are doing it..!

tomorrow a synagogue from northeren westchester comes out with us..yes tomorrow and a church group and Goldman Sachs today..what a profound thing going on, what community building, what amazing things happen..

 

perhaps we need a Habitat cafe in the monring, a community breakfast place to feed everyone and then send them out to work..we are so blessed, I am so blessed to be part of this ecumenical ministry, one of love...did you know a hammer is a tool of WORSHIP.....Did you know sheetrock represent WALLS OF LOVE  in haibitat....did you know that TRUSSES, are really HABITAT UMBRELLAS OF LOVE..and basements are FOUNDATIONS FOR THE FUTURE of great generations in habitat...I am sure you did.......

 

Lets talk about our REBUILDING NEW ORLEANS, AND REBUILDING AN AMERICAN TOWN..

the story of new orleans and mamoroneck...

 

New Orleans, articles come out on the rebuilding a proposal by a high end builder to total revitalize the city, does it mean gentrification or resurrection of a great city, does it mean demolishing history or preserving it...our last Americorp team is in Charlmette today and they state they are working hard and still so mcuh to do..

 

today we are in Mamoroneck and Harrison...30 million dollars pledged, nothing going on at all..

no work done on the area yet..no real rebuilding of flood areas..what are we waiting for folks, the only real rebuilding is that of Habitat with homeowners, like today on Elliot Street, and neighborhoods and another street in Harrison for an elderly couple, and another in New Rochelle, our Mettery our ninth ward our

towns surrounding new orleans that were affected..unbelievable, but there is hope with the neighbors with HABITAT!!!!! NO QUESTON!!!!!!  in New Orleans and in Mamoroneck and all over the world....

The world to change..continually..for the better every day..the excitement is building it..

can we imagine changing our community to a new level..can we imagine everyone chipping in to see it Greener, to see everyone have a home..can we imagine big SUVS dont drive by the poor areas or in and out of the poor areas, but people of all backgrounds stop to help one another..can we imagine commuities, all with sidewalks and with bikelanes..can we imagine no more asthma, fighting, frustration, no more rats roaches or reefers..can we imagine every congregation company citizen, working together, its all there for us to imagine, and make it happen...Imagine......the Excitement is Building together, jjk

more and more each day God continues to bless our work..I want to thank those like Liz Atwood and others who are helping us in a big way, assisting us to be able to help move our work in Mamoroneck again..helping us to reach out to areas that need to be touched.. we are blessed so much to work hard and wake up and know you are praying for us, assisting us in so many ways.. these are summer months i write this, months that i have a great need to be able to get our work done, to try to encourage more volunteers who otherwise cannot be with us...and get oru building going strongly for things like our 911 buildathon, our Yonkers habitat weekend days, our work is never ending, needless to say..

A world to change, everyday. the EXCITEMENT IS STILL BUILDING.!  always will be.. always needed. God has blessed so much for all of us..no question..We re blessed to see old volunteers who helped us on our first White PLains homes to come back and want to help us on our Bedford Homes. We are blessed to be able to think Green, we are blessed by our web site, when we see different volunteers come up and join and help us, to be able to say Jim i have a house to donate, Jim we have a need to help you...we want to help you and your mission.....our Mission is so important and yours is too.. without you we can not exist...We need you for our August 2nd NEW ROCHELLE HABITAT DAY.  We need you to volunteer in our warehouse. We need you to volunteer in our restores..in our sites, in our special events, in our planning, I have so many heroes in life. who help us all the time.. heroes like kate matigher who worked with me since the 8th grade and now moves onto Princeton University to study architecture.. Heroes like Oliver who worked with me since the 8th grade and is now studying for seminary and come backs to help us.. heroes like Chris meehan who is now at Notre Dame Law school and in Europe but is always coming back to chip in..heroes like Pat Lanza who continues to give...heroes like Mary Bonner, who retires and comes joins us immediately to help us... no question we have hereoes like Ralph Degnan..who is now in the hospital, but needs some help for his back and prayers, but up until two weeks ago looked to help us in yet another home..

I am honored as i get calls from J Teen groups from northern westchester, Muslim friends in new rochelle and Christian friends from St Patricks asking for the ability to jion us in prayer and in action in Habitat..the key to all of its success..

we need to have so much success in this world, so much to be able to share with one another so much to improve...the TIME IS NOW..we have to change ourways from selfishness to selflessness..(though still loving ourselves..) from greed to need and from fossil fuels to friendly environmental energy...

St Francis oftren spoke of the world as his brother and sister, the sun the moon, etc..

The Dali Lama has talked about how important the earth is..

if our communities are made whole appropriately, then we will be able to have a better earth, no question, better homes, better health for our children..is Time running out..no not if we start NOW...

so think about how you could walk instead of drive, think about how you could save energy instead of waste, think about how you could help instead of gluttony or greed..the TIME SURELY IS NOW...and we we act NOW.. then the Sparrows will remain beautiful and we will always know, GOD IS WATCHING OVER US AND ME...with gratitude.. jjk

today 120 plus in las vegas.. an orsen welles movie..paints starting to melt on pictures..outages occuring..

many need water every five minutes, overloads of energy burning out ..are we too late for recovery can we turn it back, can we stop the madness...no question!!!! it has to start now though..this years election will spend millions on campaigns..millions on different things..millions on commercials..funded by many lobbyists..what lobbies are moving the machine..do we know..what do the candidates stand for in helping our world..what can we do about it.

can we make our world greener, is this a Christian, Jewish and Muslim issue, a marketing corporate issue, a overlfowing river issue...we have to act now..use solar use alternative energy, use different things for us to make this world better...please.. it has to happen NOW!!!! God Bless, jjk

so the world we live in July 6th.. an inconceivable truth is one that we cant believe in..not a plug for a movie, but really how many things could we apply this to along with the environment..inconceivable truths both good and bad..

today as we think about our world and community we must think abut the different ways we are shaping it, both inside and out..what inconceivable positive truths could we hope for...no cars on the roads, public transportiations...utility companies not gauging customers,nor gas companies during the summer...peace in the mideast..a home for every family, great schools and food on tables everywhere...what actions will we take today to help make positive inconceivable truths for the futrue...lets work on them today...it can happen.
