So many come from Westchester to help daily….along with others who help regularly…to those who do thank you..Norma from Yonkers,Teresa from Yonkers,  Tom from Rye Brook, Tom from Bronxville, Pat from Rockland..all commited to being there to help those in the rockaways who have no help, no homes.! God bless you.

Each second is gift..

Yesterday one of our families Vernonica who had to lift her parents on their tables so water would not stream over them..lost her dad. He had a stroke in Sandy..he was put in the hospital…the other mom is now frail and losing hope..so many affected….so many elderly in cold…so many hurt..so many families hurting from being displaced…

There is hope as we will help rebuild Veronicas home…we have gutted it..she has three kids..we have a family who adopted them…and we have others who care to meet them and help them..pray for Veronica today and her family during this time….

And pray for habitat of Westchester…and in the world.

I have been with them for almost thirty years…a call from an original Habitater, Leroy Troyer, who works on the Carter work camp annually with Pres. Carter and Roslyn, brought me great joy yesterday…jim hows it going…we have so much to do…we had a great build in Haiti…and more…What a blessing he is.. thank you Leroy for your continued faithfulness to Habitat and more important to the Lords work here with habitat and the fuller center and in Indianapolis.

We build today with the Irish festival people..and also with the group from Xavier alumni..Tomorrow Saturday, we build with so many more as well. From all over..

Wont you help us continue to build…and bring hope and homes…as we go into our 25th anniversary..may God bless you!

Ps your end of your tax donation has one day left to make it deductible..more important help save lives with your help.

Short term disaster recovery, long term Green recovery.
The design team is on its way, making it every day to be able to help us build green..
A woman from the Rockaways association stated..do you know about SIP panels..
We have been using them since 1997 I tell her, she says they keep her warm even when her heater cant come on…what a blessing..
So we move ahead, we know that God is working..and the designs that will come will be unbelievable..that God has brought us here so far by faith..and action, and your support. God bless you

A meeting with the NYC Mayors office..volunteer organizations meet..sometimes we are worse in working together than others..

Part of our problems in the world..is we all don’t just work together….todays meeting was the beginning of creating working teams, more and more…to address

Sandy….in many ways we do this in our areas now…

We have the resources to get everone back into green rehabbed homes and new homes..if everyone, including you helps…

With out the volunteer agencies….there would be thousands more hurting, no question, thousands dieing I believe..

So heres to partnership, to Gods blessing all of our efforts…to working together…the winds of Sandy have blown us together..may be come out victorious..

For the families in need.. God bless

Day 40..in sandy territory..the beat goes on as we beat Sandy down so others may be lifted up.

To that end one of my outlets has always to been to walk in manhattan at nite..after long meetings, days of work…

Last nite I was able to get there after having been in Breezy and the l ower rockaways..

We gutted homes in rockaways, in breezy, in Roxbury, then delivered paint and compound we got donated..and helped to

Reachout and get ready for a huge volunteer weekend.  We are blessed we believe to have Americorp coming back to us in the form of rebuilders..

And we have the ability to  rebuild many homes with donations  of sheetrock from Feldman Lumber and others..

To that end, we kick it into high gear..we move ahead..we need your help.

As I walked from 32st to 20th to Houston, I thought of the streets from 32nd to 20th in the Rockaways..what a difference..

People are coming out of manhattan Christmas parties,on beautifully decorated streets, on areas that need support and help..

On areas that have sand and debris still on them..in the 20s many live in no better than shacks, small bungalows that became year round

Cottages, that now are filled with mold and they cant move out…the boardwalk,..( a piece I have small in my office and the burned out tree from Breezy)

Now is in disarray, while Union Square is abuzz…

The singers sing on stage at the garden..though we didn’t get a Garden party invite…and a singer on 1010 states, this is for all those who help..

Lots of guys on wall street aren’t helping, he says..”  that actually is not true..lots of guys on wall street are helping…and on 14th street and everywhere in between…

So I walk and pray, and get ready for another day….streets, from 20th to 220th…in the Rockaways and in Manhattan..imagine if everyone had a right to a simple decent green home..

That we implemented the army corps of engineer studies when they were recommended, and that the jeddy was still up..and had been built…

Thoughts from the hood of sandy..jjk

Friday a meeting with honor to the Clinton Global Initiative and Goldman Sachs…on Post Sandy reconstruction…

To help discuss what can be done in the future….how do we rebuild..what are some of the obstacles..opportunities…

Hard to think of opportunities now..especially when people are still without heat tonite…but there are opportunities.

How do we maintain our coastlines..what codes do we use…for building…what type of building products do we use..

Does real estate have a value to allow people a right to a simple decent home….how do we move ahead to maintain our dunes.

Do we change our ways we commute and energy we use….

All vital questions for the future..for the present…for the next generation which I call, the GENERATION OF SOLUTIONS..

But we can be part of that too…its time…

May God bless you in all you do…

The high school looks nice.not like Beach Channel high school did amonth ago..the kids hear about Sandy..and respond..how do we help..today this Friday many don’t even think of shopping, but think of their lights being turned on as gift, heat as a miracle and being back in their home..maybe as next years Christmas gift..wont you help..

Every day about six workers come to visit us..at different times..im from fema, red cross, somewhere…wanted to get a census on what you are doing…I asked them..yesterday..what are you doing, where are you from…everyday people from out of new York come in for a five minute justification questionnaire..justification of what?

Anyway, praying for them and for me, because I don’t understand..

Along with that..we hit the ground running when no one was there.. a mom came in..crying..i was denied by Fema…she starts crying again….it is hard..

People in crisis go thru more stress sometimes trying to get help then actually getting any assistance..in all of the fields..this always bothered me..

Its not a job it’s a ministry, no matter what faith..helpers are supposed to alleviate pain, not create, alleviate tension, not cause more..

So heres hope I have no justifiers, just true helpers like our volunteers today…

God bless,

Hi to my social media friends at Georgia Tech..they asked me about our social media..whats that..twitter, blog, facebook, web…it’s the way of the world…I write in the morning and at nite…

Tough things to see…an elderly man walks in with his grandson…his home is GONE! Fema has denied him..what does he do, he asks me….

Another man with heavy sun glasses says  I don’t need help, well al ittle..his couch is soaked with water still..a month later…his house needed us desperately..

An elderly man needs help in his plumbing..what do I do, we are desperate…

A policeman asks me, can you just help me move three things downstairs in the basement..stressed as I see him, we say yes..

We worked on 42nd street today, no not in Manhattan but in the far Rockaways..

We worked on 200ths street, and Doris Lane and in Bedford..this weekend will be the biggest transformation Sat in the history of NY…are you with us..

Will you support us..donate now, and or volunteer…..get ready we need insulation soon. God bless you!!!!!!!

A month ago, Hurricane Sandy hit us..like no catastrophe to hit in our present time….habitat of Westchester hit the ground running..

My experience in Mamoroneck with the floods of 2007 was practice for the work we have engaged here now…..homes needed gutting and deconstructing, mold removal, sheetrock and rebuilding while bringing hope.

With that in mind I was called after helping with tree removal here in Westchster by a friend in the Rockaways..killer..(my nickname) you got to get over here..people need you guys…

I rode over with twenty pumps, a generator and the rest is history..

That nite after pumping out a home..the ambulance was stuck at the end of the street in sand..no one was going anywhere…the next day, the dump truck was stuck..i had to stay over in the cold….

Like so many still do a month later..

From there I went to breezy point…and every day brought 100 boxes of contractor bags.. Thanks to Modern Hardware for donating some…

Every morning home depot, every nite..purchasing thousands of dolars of needed supplies…the Breezy Point people asked me to set up our work with a command center….hundreds have come for our help…we have gutted more than 200 homes, in Breezy Point,   Roxbury, and now the  Far and lower rockaways….

It looks like the apocalypse hit..

It is our Katrina!

However, there is hope..ther eis Habitat of Westchter and thousands of volunteers….

Like the Peekskill fire dept, the AOH of Rockland, Plesantville High School, New Rochelle families like the Vernis..and Burkes, the Hartmanns, Murphy brothers construction….

Marist College, Adelphi, Iona Prep, Iona students, so many..our friends from Israel, our volunteers from Yonkers and Ryebrook and more..

It is unbelievable..Saturday will be one of the most amazing game changing days in our history and in the history of NY…more than 350 volunteers with us.. at least and another r200 Monday..wait till sheetrock Monday comes in Rock the  rockaways..

We need your support…Habitat of Westchester and the people of Westchester have responded..keep responding..make this our proudest moment…..

FW: the whole world wants to respond blog

Everyone wants to help..so they say.. an organization quick to raise money but slow to come out, organized with ten workers for three hours,…their truck….

Yesterday..driving around in trucks in areas, where people aren’t during the day it is very surreal. God knows..

We are blessed………we have been there since the beginning,..every day new organizations come that I have never heard of..we want to help..we want to help.

Some are real, some not sure..hard to decipher sometimes..

All I know is that we had another 40 volunteers yesterday, prepping up for a huge weekend..working on six homes..about ten more families came out to see if we could help..we are so blessed in all we do…no question..we hit the ground running early..

If you told me a month ago I would be in the rockaways for the last 20 days I would say you are not correct.not even close..then Sandy came..

The winds of change brought us out to help..Tom and Norma, Bill and Tom Mazzola, Bishop Gibbs,  you and me..

What a whirlwind of activity of hope, a whirlwind of trying to help a whirlwind of gutting and deconstructing..

With that in mind, we continue…we work, we have hope..

There are still many in need, distressed, wont you help us adopt a street..

Wont you assist us in getting done what we need to get done…

Today we work in New Rochelle mt Vernon, White Plains, the lower rockaways and breezy.

We work hard…it is a moral imperative…

For the sake of stopping a health epidemic..for the sake of helping families..

In new Rochelle for instance, we have seen three homes that needed help…three that people had the need for assistance whose homes were In disarray, with air quality issues..

In the rockaways we have seen three hundred..

Under the guise of Brush with Kindness.. the winds of Sandy, and the difficulties for some families causes many trials…for sure.

Along with that,we announce excitingly our new home ownership continues…

We move ahead to help Vets…many vets see that we are building ahead.

That we are commited to welcome home houses for Vets, that we move to help so many..
with that in mind, help us make holidays for so many whole, help us continue to build, help us to continue to bring hope. May God bless you and yours in all y ou do!

An early morning ride to Breezy Point…how many have taken it over the years with anticipation of fun, the beach, and a trip to Sugarfoots or Kennedys Restaurant..

But today the early ride greeted us with security check points..we are bringing relief..from Habitat.contractors bags and more. While in line..will and Jenna, the couple behind me say ..can we have contractors bags….sure I say…they take it with gratitude like I gave them a million bucks..no question..within ten minutes, I see them again, while speaking to my new hero..chief Jim Dalton..an amzing man who toured the whole Point with us, with tears and strength like no other man..wtih the winds of Sandy in his eyes everytime he thought of what happened and the determination to help bring back Breezy…better than before..with Habitat bringing hope too…

Can you help us..we gave you name..we want you to come to mass..everyone will be there….the Bishop, the Senator, the local leaders. Chief confirms.. you need to be there..

He brings us on a tour, he shows us his house, waterlogged, after showing us, lines of six feet of water, sand dunes cut through the middle like the parting of the Red Sea….(maybe Moses walked thru it for old times sake…)and he chased a looter, that we caught..who ended up taking copper out of a house…we stopped him.

Along with close habitat hero Bruce Keith, we saw devestation. I brought back a charred piece of wood, from one of the 80 plus homes that burned like marshmallows in a row…we toured where we ciould put staging areas..can I drop boxes here, I ask..where can I put up volunteers..heres where my mom lives ..he starts crying….Breezy Point..oh what memories…the Breezes seem distant now..and the Winds fresh in the Minds and the Devestation to be seen..but theres hope ..theres Habitat, theres you!!!!!!! Its 330am..was exhausted fell asleep at 8am just woke up..went to the gas lines..last car protected by police just left 330am..

This is the only time I can gather thoughts, try to document what I did, before the calls and the people start rolling in..

Today, we helped families in New rochelle..went to white plains, assisted in mt Vernon and need to help cut trees there on a home tomorrow..and also went

To Breezy Point. There distributed 20 water pumps..trash bags, water, and supplies…drove two people Elaine M and her brother who lived on 207th..out of the harms way  off the island..they hadn’t eaten for two  days…they were getting picked up at erksine.by a friend..they said they had to eat..and went  to Red Lobster for a feast..they coulnt not reach their home..they deserved a feast..

People were walking aimlessly and in shock around breezy point…seven police security, and island security. Volunteer firefighters and NYFD toured and appreciated when I too gave them extra pumps to distribute..

What a world. Habitat of Westchester has been on the ground running since 2007 and before (we helped with families in a burnt out fire in 1998, and in new Rochelle on Main street years ago)

We have opened our headquarters and now are looking to help for the long haul…recovery is not over nite..help is not a one shot deal..

Pray for our work..today I go to a press conference, on the radio and spread the word..we have just begun.. your support is vital..http://www.habitatwc.org

(ps if you want to drop food off at our headquarters feel free to) or a check…

Every second is gift, we work we move we pray, we live..

We help to see our world get better we hope.

Just had an interesting conversation abouit debt.

I truly believe our country being in debt is horrible…we need to take it back..

We need to make things.

We need to get homes back on tax roles,

We need to stop the madness.

Our homeownership puts land back on the tax roles, no question..

We work hard to help to make it happen, we get land, we help families have interest free mortgagtes,

We help them to be able to have their lives changed forever.

We also teach people to build as well,

Seeing the returnees, knowing they keep coming back to us, helping us, working with us..is an amazing thing..we are so grateful.

With that in mind we move ahead…thank you Citi for being there thru thick and thin, good economies and bad, with strong volunteerism and hope..

FW: blog

Its been awhile since I've written, early morning..to think and pray about our work.. A ride and walk in Nodine Hill..one of many over the years, saw me and us prepare for

A Neighborhood Transformation Day.. A day of change, of day of volunteerism, a day of Harvey students, a day of love.

Nodine Hill, kind of like the lower east side of NY..the world travels thru. The density however of homes together is unprecedented. It reminds me of where I grew up in a three decker in Worcester, Irish immigrants.,

On the third floor, my mom carrying the coal up the stairs…last nite a grand mom and her hispanic granddaughter, the new face of immigrants, went through a trash container taking out recyclables.  A simple can or bottle we take for granted..for them, its the young girls collection of lunch money…..

We go to clean up, to Brush with Kindness to make a youth center in a basement, to paint, to bring hope, with mums, and many into the Hill.

This is part of our Aggressive Neighborhood Transformation program….working to hit neighborhoods hard, to take them back, to work with residents.

Manny a local resident of thirty years, and I reminisced on Oak Street.  Remember the fire, I said, I was right here, in December 2022..when fourteen buildings burned..and six died..

I live right next door Manny reminds me…it was crazy. He will help us with our transformation today…Harvey students will, we thank you…volunteers will, will you help us..

The fire was after the death of our families three year old, Amy, shot with a high powered rifle, with her dad on a bed watching a winnie the pooh tape. The bullet pierced the side of their home.

Devestation for all……the families two older boys have graduated college, the family had another baby and moved into our habitat holy neighborhood down the hill…one of the tree streets..

We work together to take it back………

Pray, support, help…its time!
