helpers are back with us..Alex from Yale University, Pat from Iona Prep and Bruno, the boy scouts, Dave and his two sons, all helping us complete our move, we still need help...Alex Phillippidis stopped to say hi, formerly of the Westchester Business Journal and more..a great day..so we have been very successful in so many ways, so much has been blessed.. we believe everytime someone walks in there will be a blessing, no question...sounds funny, but it is true..for our work is profound and built upon people like yourself helping.. no question...this after returning back from New Orleans yesterday, helping people, and bringing back the spirit of NOLA for the work we will do here to raise money for our New Yorleans express thru our mardi gras..

along with that our advocacy for more homes this year will be profound..

Everyday is gift..writing this from NOLA, talking to Rovella a great employee at starwood hotels...
the people, the music the food make Norleans she says, and the faith, you gotta keep that faith..it  has been a most successful trip planning for the New Yorlenas express, with a mardi gras event, and silent art auction raising support for our trip here in March to continue to help this great city rebuild... I am proposing a national conference on community service here with corporations...Yesterday I had a great lunch wtih Exec Dir. Jim Pate of New Orleans habitat, after i went out the ninth ward, and visted families and staff...we had helped build homes for there, we were joined by Flo Sno who we helped relocate back to New Orleans here, with her two great kids after they were displaced to New York from the Katrina migration...Katrina, Jim Pate, states that few people remember life pre Katrina...headlines in newspapers mark articles about recvery still, it should be a blessed year for NOrleans with the people here seeing two Bowl games, and mardi gras early, the economy looks bright..but the housing needs to come back..and that is why were are here, so Rovella and Stacy and Flo and Erica and Sharon and their families can all relocate back to live here, it is our American responsibility and Christian and Jewish and Muslim responsibility......

As i called back on conference call with my team, I pray for our construction in new york, i read  a Wall Stret Journal aritcle of Public housing designed creatively across the country, with dignity and  pride, rather than drab and depressing design...the New Yorleans express will see amazing things this year of 2008 coming, some of you have made  online donations to us, and you will amazing things this year by Habitat of Westchester, the Excitement has just begun and is building in ways that EVERYONE CAN HAVE A HOME...no question, with gratitude for New Orleans New Rochelle Metarie and Mt Kisco, and the towns and cities that we are all blessed to live in wtih freedom, jjk

Twice the night before Christmas and all through the house....house, not many can afford one today....only apartments..the headline agains read, housing at a critical need..sub prime lending crisis hitting..rent go thru the roof...what child is born into our world in substandard housing today..into a world  that people cant dream of having a home.. or into a country that people dont have running water...i go to new orleans with my kids this week for a two day in and our trip that will allow me to be able to have them see our work we have done and help to set up our New Yorleans express trip later this winter...a group i helped to start will send 250 people to build in mexico the day after Christmas,where 6 homes will be built.- volunteers today work for a Christmas -eve build on homes to help build -and finish homes on Lincoln Avenue in New Rochelle and four homes -come to be put up this week in Yonkers...what homes are there, what child is this, what Christmas doyou celebrate...so remember many need a home, many need to dream, -twice the night before Christmas and we recommit that eve-ryone has a house, a home.. As i get ready to take my two sons to new orleans, thanks to a great donor who always helps. we will plan a trip for the late winter to bring a group there as part of our continued New Yorleans Express, New York to New Orleans, New Orleans to New York..one dream one team..Our efforts have seen Stacy and her family get housed, Sharon and her family have hope, Mary Luz and her family have a home and the list goes on...

An american city, now needing to be rebuilt...in our lifetime..some aruge no, but as we often hear, i believe charity and help should begin at home in our own country, and this is certainly something tht could happen to any American City, in some ways...like Mamoroneck ..etc..In February we will hold a Mardi Gras event and silent auction, more info to follow...this is part of a Christmas journey if you will, after having seen Millard Fuller the founder and JimmyCarter in Ga. last week, with a "faith" trip, this is more an Action trip to prepare for rebuilding there...needless to say this takes nothing away from our work starting in Yonkers this week...four more homes..four of four hundred Ihope...be blessed as one of my New Orleans families always says to me, as they call me Mr. Jim...be blessed to all of you this holiday season..jjk

Back from Ga.. a great blessing to be with President Carter at the Fuller Center for housing and the founder of Habitat Millard Fuller..President Carter gave devotions and spoke about what needs to be done in terms of the world, his work and his hope and prayer for all,..it was a joy to meet with Fuller employees, Millard Fuller and Linda, and to inspire me to recommit to our mission, simple decent affordable homes for all.. no question..The theolog of the hammer during this time of Hannukkah , Christmas and Ramadan, encourages all to get involved to celebrate and to love one another thru helping those in need have a simple decent home..as we gather around the table for our holidays, please make a donation and prayer in Habitat's honor so others may have a simple decent home. Lakeland High school habitaters came to the rescue in a big way today, helping at our Habitat Restore with the move.. many came by and our larger space is a great blessing..but let me tell you how important the youth of Lakeland High school are and their parents and teachers and their commitment to Habitat...

they come and volunteer anywherein the county with great attitudes, great inspiration great help...today they moved mountains again, no question....so to Lakeland High school habitat club, thank you!!!! You are the best again.. God bless, jjk

wealth what we celebrate...a new hotel in white plains..overdevelopment which will surely cause agan the bronx river to overflow, and the down county areas...pr for the developer only that no one else is allowedto get their name, in, because the city is controlled by the developer..not just one city but many in Westchester...in the meantime, new rochelle has no affordable homes going up on any scale that the renters and their children will be able to live in in their future..the developer along with others in the city go back to CentralPark West..the night sleeps with no sounds of Christmas, no Silver Bells, its Christmas time in the city, silence, in New Ro....but wait we have our new building...at 524 main street a haven for headquarters of Hope...the small business community who are excluded from the incrowd pr, knows this...the residents who live here on evenings and weekends know this...it will surely be a great place of strength for New Rochelle and this county, no question!!!! so on Prancer, On Dancer, on Developer and Vixen, go south to florida while the rest of us are here, with the real Spirit of Christmas, helping those who are lower income to be lifted up out of poverty, to become homeowners, helping small businesses to make it incommunities, and to help Santa and real Silver Bells ring of freedom, opportunity and blessings for all...

Last thank you to Scarsdale High School Habitat club..200 people came to the school cafeteria, who helped us build ginger bread homes and and raised money to help us have a great Christmas no question!!!!!!! more than 1000 dollars were raised with two hundred volunteers and families..now that's the Spirit of Christmas..jjk

A holiday family party was in place last nite at New Rochelle High schools..volunteers from New Rochelle, Eastchester, Byram Hills, and more were there to help meet and greet and feed our Habitat families..what agreat thing..we are so happy with the leaders from our high school clubs.. no question..they are great..

we need allt he help we can get with these great youth, who will change the face of the world...they brought food, and Mr Rubins helped lead the crowd, they had music and ourfamilies had a great time..thankyou so much!!!!!

a holiday party of a builder a great fratello, Louie, and many great people..all diverse all different backgrounds..  Claude 80 years young, states, you have a real Esprit de corp..with Nick a great man successful in concrete buildings building nyc..what a world, this guys have helped to create, 11 children 6 the other..and stories of rebuilding the city...i told him of our concrete homes...with carbon fiber, and with strenght to build homes with, surprised was he, he stated lets do this..lets make this happen, let me see these go up...we take so much for granted every home, every condo,every coop, every street, we live in we ride in we walk on..who built them, who helped to survive building them, who labored over them...the psalm says I shall bless the Lord at all times, His praise ever in my mouth..may we Praise Him for great people of all ages, great fratellos, friends, amicos, amicas, amigos, amigas and more.

HOUSING CRISIS A GRADUAL DISASTER, STATES THE ARTICLE..

  HOMES FORECLOSED..PEOPLE TAKING ALL THEIR EQUITY OUT, people overspending, is that what we do, is that how we live..i know in our constant buy buy buy, and i like to buy..we dont stop. we get we grab we go, we gourd, and we are obese, while the world lives with 99 per cent less...yet we are part of the world..during this holiday season, you might know someone who needs help, someone who needs love and assistance, and many ofyou help friends, for which i say thanks be to God...and ifyou have the ability to help guide someone in a crisis, lets do it  so we can help them retain their home..lets see what we can do to reach out to others and to be thankful for God, for little things, life, liberty, walking, breathing, eating, sharing and laughing...lets look at 2008 as a time of change in our lives for the better. .pray for those who fear they will lose their homes this holiday season and pray for those who need help...EVERYONE A SIMPLE DECENT HOME..God bless, jjk

the other night i went to church..church steps that is, and i heard a choir of homeless people..I was blessed thru a friend and donor to give coats, gloves, and hats to the homeless on the steps of Fifth Avenue Pres. Church, ...thank you Jim they said.. it was a choir of homeless saying we are grateful...it was the best church service i heard, homeless giving thanks to God and in fellowship over a simple thing like socks and gloves..what do we sing thanks for!!!!!!!

A blessed day for all of us..we get ready to move into a new space on Main Street and we look to be able to have room for more furniture, and supplies at our restore to sell, no question.. Restoers are successful everywhere, and it helps us raise support..Kathy L. and her husband dropped of an early morning sofa someone will use and buy for nealy nothing at 730 am to me..cabinets come in from Larchmont, a year old, where someone just bought the hosue and doesn't like the color and we will sell them to raise support..tiles from Bedford are given, Jim at the Italian Bakery has tiles for us.. and they willhelp someone have a new floor, it is all good.

I also head to Yonkersr this morning for a trip to the kickoff of Yonkersopoly, the new game board bySt Joes medical center, sold as a fundraiser...Yonkers is a great city, very proud we are there working on concrete homes and changing neighborhoods...together.

Yesterday I met with my trio of Mary and Michael L. from NY Title..and we helped plan out Superbowl Sunday feb 3rd...Stew Leonards will donate food and volunteers from Pace Universtiy football team to others will all be out to buld with us, no question..a posslbe NFL star may join us too, and a great raffle..and hats of to Harley Davidson, Feb 16th they do their third annual Casino nite for ua at their great Harley Space, what a blessing...so much to be grateful for..and tonite our family holiday party at New Rochelle High school..who could ask for more....

last pray for the White PLains families who were burned out in the fire last week, today i meet to see if we can help place them...

So on dancer prancer Commit and Vixen, Michael and Mary and Sandy and Dick's son, we go to build we go to change and have Christmas and Hannukah everyday in our lives with the gift of home ownership..jjk

it all starts...with hope idea, prayer and discussion...i was invited today to one of our old and strongest partners, Brxonville Reformed Church, in Bronxville, to talk about affordable housing, by our board member, Joe French, and long time activist..Joe introduced me to a number of our regular builders over the year, Bill, Stoddard, Mark, John, Joe, successful business people, some active some retired, but not in their faith..still active they came for a Mens group discussion on affordable housing.....

What do we do, what are the incentives, what are the economics, what makes sense, an article on 10,000 units proposed by 2020..by the county was read from the NY Times...for me it is about faith, will, incentive, smart planning, green growth, and hope...why not Bronxville, why not here, what is stopping us..became the discussion....out of that two sites were pointed out today...possibly for four homes...no, yes!!!!! in Bronxville! 

if we can do it in Bedford, in Rye, in Larchmont, why not Bronxville...stay tuned...This fine group of people were inspired to sacrifice their time, and realize that any faith communities role is not first about political will, but the will of moral and smart sense, and then political will will follow with grass roots efforts...our high schoolers from Bronxville, our volunteers, our leaders, all are there to join us...in January another meeting will follow after a conference call next week about the two sites...what about a discussion in your town..the time is now!  Thank you Bronxville Reformed Church, mens grouip, students, all ...may our faith motivate us to action, be us Chrsitian, Jewish Muslim, or no faith, the time is now! The excitement is building!!!!! jjk

building, thinking green, not just for the holidays but for our homes and community..today i was honored to be on a flood radio show with Mayor Otis of Rye, Supervisor Valerie Okeefe of Larchmont, and City Manager Chuck STrome of New rochelle..George Lattimer State Assembly called in as well..what world do we have, how do we protect homes from the floods, what have we accomplished in Mamoroneck..and how do we not let flooding happen again..all items of the day, no question...

these are green questions, development questions...questions of water run off, how do we leave our world for the future with our families, our grandchildren...

we will be introducing on our web site, info on green building regularly...no question, how to make our communtiies green, how to change things for the future..

how do we drive less, do we pave our driveways or not, do we stop waterrunnoff..

the day that was.. as we prepare tomorrow for a historic 20th anniversary kickoff Walk for Homes Now! we celebrate the preparation with our buildign with groups like Horace Greeley, Eastchester High school, Bedford Presbyterian church and Bronxville Reformed church all helping to build throughout the town and county along with Taconic Builders.....that means today we built in New Rochelle, Bedford Mamoroneck, Yonkers and Rye...we were asked today to help in Mt Kisco again... an elderly person begged me for a plumber and electrician i have no money to pay to connect their utilities...we need your help......

also a court advocate wrote me she couldn't believe we couldn't respond overnite to a Veteran in need this Veterans Day...we are doing what we can.. but we can only do it if you make special pledges and commitments to us financially today...i can tackle their needs if you help fill my bills being pad with a donation today...my board of directors has been great..running with me as responding to needs...we cant do it all, but together we can....if you help

Tomorrow a historic Walk for homes  1pm at St. Augustines church in larchmont...will you join us, will you pledge me..will you make a multi year pledge in honor of our 20th anniversary kickoff...EVERYONE A HOME...IN OUR LIFETIME..WHY NOT, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR.. GOD BLESS, JJK

headlines today tell of the Pope coming to America, to Yonkers NY `on days that we will see the election in full swing, days when we will be in full swing with hammers as well...and another story talks about the Georgia Governor holding a day of prayer for rain in the South.. a day when there is a need for drastic measures due to lack of rain...for those of us who have faith of any kind...we celebrate efforts such as these..efforts for more hilited spiritual recognition of the one God we all believe in...if there was another 911 we would be quick to call prayer services everywhere....yet the Governor of Georgia is chastised..though they are in desperate situations..situations of rain drought that could happen here in a minute.. we wake up on a gray rainy day, but with gladness if we think of it..people would be standing on their tables praising God, Jewish Christian Muslim and no faith, if they had the slight rain we had today here in New York...

do we get ready to pray everyday, for thanksgiving, during crisis, during normal times..are we chastised in our own circles...know that Habitat workers on the whole know there is a higher power that this ministry that welcomes all, is successful because of prayer, and only because of the theology of the Hammer and hearts hands hanmers and help from you..

 

Tomorrow is an excitiing day, our HOPES seniors group comes together to discuss getting more retirees involved..yesterday I discussed with Mattergy solar energy company about solar panels to go on our homes and on our Restore, and fiinally the panel foundations from Altus and Olde Castle come down to start four new homes for the holidays...What a blessed event.. for this and for you we are thankful...

Two things i ask you to pray for, for Veterans Homes to be built by Habitat for those returning from war, and for our Holiday  Homes...one more thing, for our friends in Atlanta, and in Argentina and for Habitats all over the world, for homes and healthy environment...know you are in my prayers this day.. with gratitude, jjk

mickey minnie..pluto all working on our sites...120 Disney employees working all over our neighborhoods in Yonkers...a great day, brisk, yet productive as many VOLUNTEARS were out there working on our sites..doing great things...no question...making a community garden, helping to paint homes, helping to rehab a house, all in the name of helping....our relationship goes back to the Regis and Kelly house we worked on and took down on 57th Street on the West End years ago...(see Daily News Regis and Kelly house..habitat)  it was an amaizng event, no question...

Corporations can change the world, I was honored to speak to Russ Hamptom the President as he painted the porch on his knees, the floor there, next to Mike a Production manager...Russ is a great guy, down to earth and so grateful to be part of what we were doing, no question.seeing his employees, getting out there doing great things, team building, helping a neighborhood....that's what there gift of communithy service is in the business world..today American Express comes out to help us...also Commerce Bank kicked off last nite their Coins for Caring and Nickels forNails program.. a great thing...so get your company or group involved, we need you ... the world to Change..Walt Disney would be proud...jjk

Election nite ...2007..

tonite i will be on larchmont lmctv. and wvox..with commentary..

last nite as i spoke on Sam's radio show, head of the NAACP, we spoke about too much smoke and mirrors and no real significant thing being accomplished in terms of homes for Americans in one of the wealthiest counties in the world...  Communities hope for the best..they work hard, they seek to have the American Dream...politicans talk about building it, for ten years with developers help..but nothing is done...

on  a large scale....versus nyc we look like puppies in terms of neogitating...

It is time for us to be passionate again for the sake of the American Dream and dreams across this country and world...God wants this for us for all faiths and religions no question...and we can make this happen..we can help to see that people have homes, that their are opportunities here..no question.

we need your help in this vital cause..as we embark on such success, we step in Faith, in hope and in action..Let this be an historic election day...and may be make things happen that will help us for the future of our grandkids for this country and for the world.. be blessed as Sharon from New Orleans says to me..get out and vote and may tomorrow be a great new start for us all.

habitat..

 

Appointed, annointed, elected, a big week for elections, a big week for so much for us here.

Our weekend, our Mondays and Tuesdays, were successful in the way that we had Grenwich Associates work so hard, on our sites their first time...also we had Trinity Pawling school come all the way with the help of Keegan, one of my summer youth leaders...renamed Cool Breeze.. as many in the summer get Habitat knicknames, brought his school down to help us. We also had Mt. St. Vincents, the New Rochelle Alternative School, the Hackley school and many more.. I also spoke Friday to a strong assembly at

Harvey School...we are blessed to have so many companies youth syngagues, churches, helping us all the time....God is good all the Time, Don Moen sings..we are led as the Psalmist says to build our houses on good foundations and we do it with so many in Service.

 

I will be creating a special thanksgiving day of service to the youth of New Rochelle and the county in the near future..our future is bright with our Youth.

And our older Youth our retirees guide us all with enthusiasm, experience, wisdom, strength to help our future so much..

Stay tuned for a busy week...Commerce Bank holds their thank you this week to assist us in our work with flood victims...we also have our Big Walk for Homes, this week, come with a sign you believe people should have homes.. this coming Sunday... ABC Disney comes out for the first time to our sites in Yonkers.. working with us...and our Restores have special sales this week..its all good, you are all good, lets keep it going as we prepare for our 20th Annierversary of Habitat of Westcvhester, The Excitement has only just begun, and is building strongly with you....may you be blessed in your work!!!!! jjk`

WALKING IN MANHATTAN I OFTEN LOOK AT HOW PEOPLE LIVE IN DIFFERENT CONDITIONS..HOW THEY LIVE IN CONDOS COOPS, HOW THEY TRANSPORT THEMSELVES, WHAT STORES ARE THERE..DID YOU KNOW THAT MANY BLOCKS HJAVE GREAT INSTITUTIONS OF RELGION THERE AS WELL...AS I PRAYED FOR OUR WORK TODAY IN WHAT I CALL MY PRAYER WALKS (AND A WALK WHERE I AM STILL IN LOVE WITH MANHATTAN AND ALL ABOUT IT.) I SEE THE AMERICAN BIBLE SOCIETY...OUTSIDE TELLS A STORY OF A MAN WHO INPSIRED MILLIONS TO PRAY IN 1837..WITH A SIMPLE MEETING FOR BUSINESSES...A MEETING THAT LED TO A REVIVAL IN NY AND THROUGHOUT THE WORLD...REMINDED ME OF SOMEONE LIKE MELVI JONES OF THE LIONS CLUB, WHO DEDICATED BUSINESSES LIFE IN SERVICE, OR ROTARY OR KIWANIS..WHERE THEY HAVE  A SIMPLE PRAYER BEFORE A MEETING..TODAY I MEET WITH A NUMBER OF BUSINESSES AT LUNCHTIME OVER THE REVITALIZATION OF DOWNTOWN NEW ROCHELLE...OR REVIVAL IF YOU WILL..I BELEIVE GOD NEEDS TO BLESS EVERY TOWN AND CITY IN A WAY THAT WILLHELP IT TO EXIST STRONGLY..SO EVERY DAY I WILL ASK FOR YOU TO PRAY FOR A DIFFERENT TOWN A DAY.....

 

AS  YOU CONTINUE TO WALK UP THE BLOCK TOWARDS LINCOLN CENTER YOU SEE THE JESUS CHRIST CHURCH OF LATTER DAY SAINTS...AND THEN CONTNUE ON AND THE LINCOLN CENTER SYNAGOGUE IS THERE...MANY PLACES WHERE PEOPLE WORSHIP...LEARN PRAY AND THEN GO TO WORK AND CHANGE THE WORLD IN THEIR OWN CIRCLES IN MANHATTAN..

I THEN WALKED BACK TOWARDS MY CAR...ONLY VIA WAY OF ROCKEFELLER CENTER...WHERE I STOPPED AND SAW FLAGS OF THE WORLD, AND THEN STOPPED AND SAID A PRAYER FOR NEW ORLEANS AND THE HOMES WE HAD BUILT IN ROCKEFELLER CENTER FOR KATRINA..RIGHT THERE IN THE MIDDLE OF MANHATTAN, I PRAYED FOR THE FAMILIES WHO MOVED INTO THE HOMES WE FRAMED UP THERE, AND THEN PRAYED FOR THE MANY WHO STILL NEED TO GET INTO THEIR HOMES...

 

TODAY I AM ASKING YOU TO PRAY FOR NEW ROCHELLE IF YOU PRAY, FOR US TO CREATE MORE AFFORDABLE HOMES, TO CREATE A DOWNTOWN TAHT WILL INCLUDE COOPS AND CONDOS FORTHE AVERAGE WORKING PERSON, AND TO HELP SEE OCT 31ST AS A DAY WHEN WE KICKOFF THE THANKSGIVING SEASON...A SEASON WE GIVE THANKS OF ALL FAITHS, AS I WALKED IN ANOTHER SET OF STORES..THE STORES HAD ALREADY GOTTEN THE COSTUMES OUT AND PUT IN THANKSGIVING AND CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS....

Unless the Lord build thehouse, they labour in vain that build it...psalm 126 states..

we often run around, scurrying, doing nothing really, but keeping busy.....we very rarely stop. and recognize that the house is made of walls but the home is made of love...do we stop before we go anywhere in our day, relax, look at the birds, be grateful to God in our own home..be thankful..be thankful before we build the house to make it a home

Most Saturdays are sat of love for Habitat, because volunteers stop and build the house into a home with love, and volunteers and the families...be Christian Jew or Muslim or no faith, it is a labor of love..a love of sweat and helping and changing a neighborhood.....this all works, and makes it happen for the best..makes thousands of homes, from the Jimmy Carter work camp this week in Los Angeles to Argentina where we have built anumber of homes with our tithe to El Salvador as well and Tajikistan and from Yonkers to Mamoroneck to Rye to Bedford...all have been with love...so dont just build a house. build a home in your heart and then in your community....with the Lord...jjk

an intersting day..the headlnes consumed by baseball..by a winning team and by someone who will receive more than 25 million a year...we could build 250 homes a year on one of the salaries..i congradulate anyone who can get that type of salary.. no question, though we hope they help contribute to great causes in the meantime...sit back someday and look at what rules our headlines.an interesting case study..One headline of interest is Housing suit may exceed 400 thousand..

a suit that was brought against the county for not challenging municipalities enough in segregation and zoning laws against housing segregation.....a case in point...one person who lives in an affluent town stated, you should help over there,not in my town...help in Portchester not here...in Rye...well that attitude is one that we have seen exist for those of us who wanted to have homes built for years...an apologetically teh acceptance of such an attitude as the quid pro quo, and it would never change...however we are proud that we have built in larchmonnt bedford, and are meeting in armonk and north castle...and other areas as well.

why stop people from having a home..EVERYONE A HOME is my theme, we can do this and do it well with people realizing that it is healthy, safer, lowers taxes and helps allcommunities if you have affordable homes that people own, and pay taxes on....so heres to baseball, they are happy in Beantwon and Worcester Ma today..but let us be happy in those who dare to speak up for rights of people the average American family to get a simple decent home.  the World Series of housing is coming up...who do you want to win..
